Spanish Energy Revolution underway

The latest news from Spain makes good reading. The Spanish wind industry has been booming lately, and now the solar sector is starting to kick in.

The latest data from the Spanish transmission system operator (REE) shows that in April solar electricity met 3.2% of Spain's power needs. All renewables, including hydro, provided 30%. The reason why solar is showing so strongly in these numbers is because of last year's boom in photovoltaics, after friendly government regulations resulted in more than 3,000 MegaWatts of capacity being installed. Concentrating Solar Power is also starting to pick up now, and 3 plants providing 81 MegaWatts of capacity are already in operation.

Another reason for the higher share of supply form renewables is because of a fall in electricity demand, down 9% in the first four months of this year.
