Full feedWatching CO2 continuously pumped into the atmosphere
The latest update from Gavin. He's been on a smokestack at the Patnow coal powered station in Konin, Poland since early this morning.
The sun has set and the wind is still howling on the smoke stack here at Patnow coal power station. Some of the climbers went down and have now been arrested, and five of us remain on the stack preparing to settle in for the night. Magda has been doing none-stop interviews with Polish media all afternoon, explaining why we are here and what Polish Prime Minister Tusk needs to do to tackle climate change.
Up here, there is no getting away from the smokestacks pumping away continuously into the atmosphere. As this coal plant produces 10 million tonnes of CO2 per year, we've just worked out that at the time of writing this blog, about 10,000 tonnes of CO2 have been emitted since we arrived this morning. And by the end of the climate negotiations in Poznan there will have been another 300,000 tonnes of CO2 put up into an atmosphere from this coal power plant alone. And that is an atmosphere that doesn't have room for much more room for more CO2.
So I'll be counting more tonnes of CO2 as I fall asleep tonight. It won't be an easy sleep.
