The car lobby: 20-20 vision or memory loss
European car industry lobby ACEA has just announced plans to get CO2 emissions from vans to come down a bit. Calling their initiative "Vision 20-20" they aim to reduce emissions by 20% by 2020.
If you read the bold statement on ACEA's website, you'd be forgiven for thinking that it was their idea to come up with action on reducing CO2 emissions in vans.
But those of us who've been following the cars issue won't be surprised to find that there are already plans on the EU's table to look at CO2 emissions from light vehicles by the end of this year. Who knew?
But though ACEA seem to have a short memory, we have seen it all before when the car lobby brought in voluntary agreements in an attempt to avoid EU regulation on passenger cars.
The Euractiv website reports that van makers "are keen to show Brussels that legislation would be unnecessary".
Unnecessary? They clearly don't they remember what happened last week.
If I was ACEA I'd be praying that the EU commissioners were suffering from short-term memory loss and have forgotten all about last week's vote. And that they couldn’t remember that the car industry's failure to meet their own voluntary targets meant that the EU had to step in and take action to reduce CO2 emissions from cars.
And if they've got such a bad memory, maybe they'll forget about the need to regulate them altogether.
