One minute of your time please
If you've been following this blog and wondering how you can influence the decision - Greenpeace has organised a petition to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, telling her not to allow the proposal to be wrecked by the car industry's lobbying. Instead she should follow through on the German government's own position on car emissions by supporting a European standard of 120g of CO2 per kilometre driven by 2012 for all new cars.
It's vital that we get Germany to change its mind and support the proposals. It's the German car makers who are lobbying hard to get the proposals watered down. And in whose interest?
In Italy, Fiat has threatened to pull out of ACEA as its interests aren’t being represented - and we can see why - Fiat is doing well selling small cars in France.
In France, people are turning away from their own car industry and buying even smaller, more efficient cars from Fiat.
In the UK, emissions from new cars are on the decrease.
Just imagine if all the concerned citizens of those 3 countries (plus those in Germany who are worried about the car industry's attempt to sabotage an attempt to do something about climate change) all got together and signed the petition. What kind of message would that send?
And if people in all the countries in Europe signed on, that message would be even stronger.
It's time to let our leaders know that we want action on climate change.
I signed the petition this morning. It took me less than a minute. Just one minute. - that's all I'm asking.
