A postponement by another name

I did warn you that though we won the vote last week, it wasn't all over.

And to be fair, ACEA warned us too with their comment, "It is not the end of the story." So it's no surprise that the gloves are off and we're already in round two of the people vs the car lobby.

According to Reuters The French, (remember they have the EU presidency) are trying to get the proposals watered down, after they'd just been beefed up by the environment committee.

One of the biggest victories that came out of that last vote was the rejection of a phase in of the targets. Guido Sacconi had put forward a 70% phase-in in his compromise amendments. And the committee members showed him exactly what they thought of it by blowing that idea out of the water.

But now, France is proposing an even weaker version - a phase in starting at 60% in 2012 and rising to 100% in 2015.

But the truth is it's not a phase in at all, it's just a postponement with a fancy name and some confusing percentages.

Because this so called phase in means that almost no additional efforts would be required until 2012. So the carmakers can put their feet up and enjoy a cup of tea (or something stronger) while we in the real world suffer the effects of climate change.

Anyone would have thought they were on another planet. A planet where "phase-in" spells "do nothing" and climate change isn’t anything to be worried about.
