Texas

Crew.

Texas  |  2nd mate  |  Canada

[ Texas is also our “Fiddler on the bridge”. During his night-watch, he always carries his violin up to the bridge, just in case he has enough time to practice when things slow down in the night, or when the ship is in anchor. - Ivona ]

1. All time favorite book

"One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish", By Dr. Seuss. It is the most worn out book in my library. I also quite like the "Merchant of Venice", by Shakespeare. Most of my book collection is quite technical (computer stuff, science, electronics).

2. Music that makes you jive.

Samba, and salsa, also funk. I have a very eclectic collection of music. I listen to everything except death metal. My iPod is filled with music. Lately I have been listening to Alabama III (country, acid house, jazz, blues, gospel)

3. What are the words you live by?

The words I live by are located on a small document, which has about 20 lines. This document is called the "Desiderta", and was found in the 1800's in some church in the States.
The “Desiderta” contains very simple phrazes, and it starts something like this: “I walk placidly among haste and confusion”, and contains advice like “use caution in business because the world is filled with tricky people”, etc.

Furthermore, I believe in philosophy of nonviolenece, for effective and meaningful change.

4. If you could live your “perfect life”, where would you be, and what would you be doing?

This question is difficult because right now I have the perfect job. If my life was perfect than I would spend my time in University lectures on Quantum Physics and Exo-Biology. I would be really good at skateboarding; I would have helicopter and a small garden with yummy tomatoes where I would watch my peas grow. I would live with all of my cool, beautiful, talented, artistic friends, and the less talented too.

5. So far, which part of this Baltic Cod campaign has been most memorable?

Many years from now I will remember this campaign, and think ”this is the campaign where I lost my straw hat” (note pic). I also quite enjoyed my bicyle ride around Bornholm island; I really wanted to see the Baltic.

6. What was your worst fear coming on-board the Arctic Sunrise to join this campaign?

I was concerned, because being away affects my life at home. Other than that, I was simply looking forward to another adventure, and Baltic was a place I always wanted to see.

7. Describe you personality in three words.

ideallistic, charming, curious

8. What is your most memorable Greenpeace moment?

When I was knocked into the water in the Southern Ocean by a harpoon line from a Japanese whaling ship. As a kid I remember seeing a Greenpeace action blocking a pipe - that really stuck in my mind.

9. What do you enjoy most about your night watches?

I really enjoy just being there (on the bridge), when we are in anchor for example. In addition my night-watches give me an opportunity to sleep-in till noon. I enjoy practicing my violin on the bridge, but sometimes feel I do not have enough time to do it. I always carry it with me, just in case a have a few minutes to play it.
