ESPERANZA CREW: Serkan Volunteer Deckhand Turkey Hi , I am Serkan from Middle East, Turkey , being on Esperanza as a volunteer-deckhand...on the land, helping the campaigns and all sort of activities in Turkish Office, which is a part Greenpeace Mediterranean. Here we are above the Arctic Circle , north of Norway, the region called Lofoten.. since we arrived this area, everybody on board was fascinated by the beauty of here... BUT, there are some ugly games being played in this region too... Because of the oil with power struggles causing to war and invasion in Iraq as we all know, here multinationals like Shell and another smaller companies are the biggest problem of well-being and diversity of the all region and all livings...if oil drilling starts by the decisions of the politicians, who have been elected by the people living here, but being highly affected by companies like Shell, number of the drills are going to increase rapidly , more big oil companies will get involved to dominate to this part of the earth and we will lose this amazing, diversed sea and the coast with regular permanent pollution. We are seeing the results of oil drilling in north sea.. Like oil drilling another threat here is oil tanker traffic from Russia to Holland and United States of course, passing so close to coast without safe regulations. Just one big oil tanker accident can cover the area with darkness and suffocate the life here...never forgetting the destruction of oil spill of Prestige in Spain, and industrial over fishing is destroying the amazingly diverse fish resources and all local fishing practices. These are the reasons why we are here... After being together with the people who live here and to demand , we can stop the all oil drilling projects before starting, pushing the energy companies to develop, promote and use renewable energy instead of all destructive energy making practices , and make the government officials regulate the safest way of oil traffic and destructive industrial over fishing.. Seeing , thinking and acting are what this beautiful earth deserves from us... now, in Lofoten,Norway... so please, altogether.....
