ESPERANZA
CREW: Sari
Tolvanen Marine Biologist Finland For how long have you been in Greenpeace? I joined Greenpeace in 2003 and this is my second trip on the wonderfull Esperanza. I am here to communicate and expose the sad state of our oceans and the threats they face. Oceans everywhere, where ever you look, are in crisis. Once plentifull seas are emptying out quick and pristine coastlines are looking more like industrial landscapes - below and above the surface. The Barents Sea and the Lofotens are still relatively pristine and the cod here is considered as the last remaining relatively healthy cod stock on the planet. It is essential that the area remains untouched by industrial activities and the fisheries here is managed sustainably, we simply cannot let this area go the way of the North Sea! I am here because we urgently need to get the goverments to set aside significant areas of the worlds' oceans and protect them from destructive activities and industrial fishing. Otherwise, during our life times, we will see the last of many marine creatures and there will be nothing but plankton and jellyfish left in the sea for the generations to come. I am here because knowledge gives responsibility and doing nothing is not an option I can live with. And I also want to say: "The end of the line - how overfishing is changing the world and what we eat" by Charles Clover. READ IT!!! |
