Hi, my name is Maaike Adriaansen, I'm second mate on the Esperanza. I started as a volunteer activist in the Dutch action team in 1996. That was during my biology study. Over the years I got to work on the ships for Greenpeace and after a while I noticed sailing was a better job for me then teaching on a secondary school. So I ended up in school again and got my ticket to sail as a mate.
Now and then I sail on other ships, but for me sailing for Greenpeace is the best. trying to make people aware of their environment. Without awareness of the environment, nature won't be saved.
The Lofoten is a beautiful place to be. This is one of the places not ruined yet. This campaign has a lot of aspects, which I really like. Very often it's not just one thing that is the problem. So it feels really good to be here and I hope we're making a good start on keeping this area as beautiful and rich as it is now.
