How come you are on a Greenpeace ship?
I went to the office to hand in a translation, went for a coffee after that... et voila/! Ended up here, now, sailing again. That was last year during Easter Holidays. There was an Open Boat in La Coruna, Galicia, they needed volunteers and it so happened that I could go. I was working at a school by then and my holidays were like the kids', extended for a week. Therefore, I asked the First Mate by then, Anita, if I could stay longer than the weekend, helping on board (all hands are always welcome). Since then, I realised I was happy on board and started thinking “what if I apply to get a three months period volunteering on board?” After which I went to actually thinking doing it as my real job, and I am about to take my first Basic Courses on Sailing, Ships, Safety, Fire Fighting...
What are your thoughts on the campaign?
It doesn't matter where the oil comes from, if it ends up struggling with waves on the surface, leaking to the bottom of the sea, or covering the coast. I don’t think that's of any good. It's a big short/long term reaction chain, and the consequences of that are everlasting. It doesn't matter how clean the beach may seem, for example, there's still a lot damage around (cannot avoid thinking about the Prestige consequences in Spain, or any other oil spill around the world). That's why, or at least some of the reasons, SENSITIVE AREAS are needed to be clearly labeled. Marine reserves? Protected Areas? Name it "X", but do something for them.
There is still a lot to do. Every single hand is useful inside and outside Greenpeace. And remember if you ever come on board, visiting or sailing, SAFETY FIRST!!
