If there is one place on earth where a pristine marine environment still exists, then this is it. And we still have the chance to protect it for future generations, as well as ensuring sustainable fisheries and maintaining a traditional coastal culture far into the future. However, the Norwegian government now wants to open this sensitive Arctic region to offshore oil development, gives free reign to the offshore factory fishing fleet, has no control over illegal fishing and fails to properly manage oil tanker traffic from Russia. For me this is akin to criminal behaviour. Norway has an international duty to manage this fantastic oceanic region on behalf of all humanity, and with the Integrated Management Plan under development, they also have the opportunity to do so. Lets hope we can talk some sense into them before it's too late.
What do you miss the most when out at sea?
Nothing, what fantastic a life. Well, OK, I do miss my wife, my 24-7 broadband Internet connection and online gaming (something that clashes with the former) and long, evening walks in the forest around Oslo (we have a treadmaster onboard, but its not quite the same). Fresh sea air, fantastic scenery, experiencing the local culture first hand and knowing we're making a difference makes up for this "hjemmelengsel" as we call it in Norwegian. |
