WooHoo!!!!!
Yowser, we're in the final five for a Webby award for www.greenpeace.org in the "Activism" category!
Over the last year, we introduced a whole new website, built in open source software, with a new voice, much more focus on internet activism, and as much funky stuff as we could come up with.
As a result, we've seen audience rise by 56% and sign-ups to our cybercentre rocket up 129%. We've seen increasing pick-up of our stories at premium news sites and weblogs around the web. We've knocked over a couple of targets with some smart cyberactivist campaigns and brought a lot of folks into our activist community who've never been a part of online activism before.
But we're still not winning...
===========
The globe keeps warming, the war keeps going, and corporations keep polluting.
So while we're all sort of bouncing around in our chairs up here in the Web Mammal Menagerie in Amsterdam, button-popping chuffed to be in the final five for a nifty award for our website, there's a better reason to be happy about the traffic than the nomination:
More Activists.
A Webby nomination carries with it a lot of mouseclicks. Every one of those visitors who signs up as a cyberactivist increases our power to challenge multinational corporations worldwide, many of whom have advertising budgets that dwarf our entire worlwide income.
I'm well aware that part of the reason we're in the running is because we've been outspoken anti-war activists, and if there's ever been a time when anti-war activism is "in" -- it's now. Well, let's give a voice to this "second superpower" of world opinion and get on with the job that's facing us:
Greenpeace exists because this fragile earth deserves a voice. It needs solutions. It needs change. It needs action.
Looking forward to working with a whole lot more folks to make that happen.
