A few unusual guests

mothWe don't always need to go into t he forest to see a bit of Amazon biodiversity, sometimes the wildlife comes to us.

Our most frequent and abundant guest are not the loggers, not even the community people, but insects from the Amazon. Some of them are unwanted guests, but for the most part we enjoy the close up look at the strange smaller creatures of the Amazon.

And they are not even all so small. Last night there was a grasshopper on board the length of my hand.

One morning this week we had a particularly stunning collection of moths on deck. There was a white one that would stick it's orange bum in the air if you blew on it, one that I think looks like Sauron from Lord of the Rings and one as big as my hand with almost florescent decoy eyes on its tail.

Check out this flash slideshow to see just a few of our favourite visitors.

Feel free to try to identify them and let us know what they are. My wildlife guide is pathetically inadequate and we only have someone on board who specialises in Amazon bats, no moth scientists.
